In January we gave away native Maine seeds, which need a long winter to germinate. The seeds need to be exposed to the elements, yet protected, so starting the seeds in pots is a good way to ensure successful germination. We gave away Wild Bee-balm (Monarda fistulosa) and New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae) purchased from Wild Seed Project, and Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) and Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) collected by volunteers.

Here are Wild Bee-balm, New England Asters and Butterfly Milkweed seedlings. In a few weeks, we will transplant them to larger pots.
